OpenAI deprecation policy
OpenAI emails customers actively using a model and documents each deprecation on its deprecations page, with minimum notice of at least 6 months for generally available models and at least 3 months for specialized variants (chat, Codex and deep research variants). Preview models may be retired with much shorter notice, such as 2 weeks, and safety or compliance concerns can force a faster timeline. Every deprecated model or endpoint gets a shutdown date, and at shutdown it is no longer accessible. Inference on fine-tuned models continues until the underlying base model is deprecated. Shutdown dates are also exposed through the optional shutdown_date field on GET /v1/models.
