Error message
API Error: Request rejected (429) · this may be a temporary capacity issue. If it persists, check https://status.claude.com.

Status: By designLast verified 3 documented fixes2 sources

What it means

You have hit the rate limit configured for your API key, Amazon Bedrock project, or Google Cloud project. This is distinct from the server-side throttle API Error: Server is temporarily limiting requests (not your usage limit).

Causes

  • The rate limit tier on your API key or cloud project
  • A stray ANTHROPIC_API_KEY routing requests through a low-tier key instead of your subscription
  • High concurrency from many parallel subagents or tool calls

How to fix it

  1. Fix 1.

Run /status and confirm the active credential is the one you expect.

    Slash command
    /status
  2. Fix 2.

Check your provider console for active limits and request a higher tier if needed.

  3. Fix 3.

Reduce concurrency: lower CLAUDE_CODE_MAX_TOOL_USE_CONCURRENCY, avoid running many parallel subagents, or switch to a smaller model with /model for high-volume scripted runs.
