AWS-managed remote MCP server, part of the Agent Toolkit for AWS, that lets agents look up AWS documentation and skills without credentials and run authenticated AWS API calls and Python scripts in a sandbox under IAM. AWS hosts it at https://aws-mcp.us-east-1.api.aws/mcp, or you can run mcp-proxy-for-aws-cli (pypi) locally with OAuth auth.

Notes and caveats

  • Announced generally available on 2026-05-06.
  • Regional endpoints in us-east-1, us-west-2, ap-southeast-1, ap-southeast-2, ap-northeast-1, eu-central-1, eu-west-1, eu-west-2.
  • Auth: OAuth 2.1 via AWS Sign-in (attach AWSMCPSignInOAuthAccessPolicy) or SigV4 through the MCP Proxy for AWS (uvx mcp-proxy-for-aws-cli), which is needed for multi-account, read-only mode or a default region.
  • The Cursor snippet is the SigV4 config documented for Cursor IDE, Claude Desktop and Devin Desktop; Cursor OAuth uses the URL with ?oauth=initialize.
  • Claude Code and Codex plugins (aws-core) bundle the server with skills.
  • No extra charge beyond AWS resources used.
  • AWS recommends it over the older AWS API MCP Server and AWS Knowledge MCP Server.
  • The linked aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws repo (skills and plugins) is Apache-2.0; that license covers the repository, not the managed service. awslabs/mcp README still labels it 'in preview', which predates the GA announcement.
