Setup guide - From DeepSeek and GitHub Copilot docs

Use DeepSeek in GitHub Copilot

Copilot Chat in VS Code supports bring-your-own-key models through the Custom Endpoint provider (Chat Completions, Responses or Messages API), configured in chatLanguageModels.json. You point it at DeepSeek's documented chat completions endpoint with model deepseek-flash.

Steps

  1. Step 1.

    Open the Language Models editor: choose Manage Language Models (gear icon) in the chat model picker, or run Chat: Manage Language Models from the Command Palette.

  2. Step 2.

    Select Add Models, then Custom Endpoint. Enter a group name, a display name and your DeepSeek API key, and choose the Chat Completions API type.

  3. Step 3.

    VS Code opens chatLanguageModels.json. Configure the model as below (Custom Endpoint schema from VS Code docs, filled with DeepSeek's endpoint and ids), then save.

    JSON
    [
      {
        "name": "DeepSeek",
        "vendor": "customendpoint",
        "apiKey": "${input:deepseekApiKey}",
        "apiType": "chat-completions",
        "models": [
          {
            "id": "deepseek-flash",
            "name": "DeepSeek Flash",
            "url": "https://api.deepseek.com/chat/completions",
            "toolCalling": true,
            "vision": true,
            "contextWindow": 1000000,
            "maxOutputTokens": 384000
          },
          {
            "id": "deepseek-v4-pro",
            "name": "DeepSeek V4 Pro",
            "url": "https://api.deepseek.com/chat/completions",
            "toolCalling": true,
            "vision": false,
            "contextWindow": 1000000,
            "maxOutputTokens": 384000
          }
        ]
      }
    ]
  4. Step 4.

    Select the model from the chat model picker. Restart VS Code if it does not show up.

Caveats

  • This combines VS Code's documented Custom Endpoint provider (which replaces the deprecated OpenAI Compatible provider and github.copilot.chat.customOAIModels) with DeepSeek's documented endpoint and model ids. The token limits follow DeepSeek's documented 1M context and 384K max output. Only deepseek-flash supports vision.
  • BYOK covers chat and utility tasks only. Inline suggestions (code completions), semantic search and embeddings still need GitHub Copilot.
  • On Copilot Business or Enterprise, an admin must enable the Bring Your Own Language Model Key in VS Code policy.
  • DeepSeek thinking mode is on by default. Requests that include tools must pass reasoning_content back, or the API returns a 400 error. VS Code's docs do not say whether Custom Endpoint chat-completions models do this. modelOptions can send {"thinking": {"type": "disabled"}} to turn thinking off (our combination, untested).
  • Alternative: apiType messages against DeepSeek's Anthropic-format base URL https://api.deepseek.com/anthropic. VS Code appends /v1/messages when the URL has no explicit API path. This pairing is inferred from both docs and was not tested.
  • DeepSeek's quick-start page names GitHub Copilot among supported tools but has no dedicated Copilot guide page.
