Setup guide - From DeepSeek and Kilo Code docs

Use DeepSeek in Kilo Code

Kilo Code has a built-in DeepSeek provider for both the VS Code extension (Settings > Providers) and the CLI (DEEPSEEK_API_KEY plus kilo.json). Kilo's example default model is the discontinued deepseek/deepseek-chat, so use a current DeepSeek id instead.

Steps

  1. Step 1.

    Create an API key in the API keys section of the DeepSeek Platform (https://platform.deepseek.com/api_keys).

  2. Step 2.

    VS Code extension: open Settings (gear icon), go to the Providers tab, add DeepSeek and enter your API key. The extension stores this in your kilo.json config file.

  3. Step 3.

    CLI: set the API key as an environment variable.

    Terminal
    export DEEPSEEK_API_KEY="your-api-key"
  4. Step 4.

    CLI: or configure it in ~/.config/kilo/kilo.json or ./kilo.json (verbatim from Kilo docs).

    JSON
    {
      "provider": {
        "deepseek": {
          "env": ["DEEPSEEK_API_KEY"],
        },
      },
    }
  5. Step 5.

    Set your default model. Kilo's docs show "deepseek/deepseek-chat". Replace it with a current DeepSeek id, for example:

    JSON
    {
      "model": "deepseek/deepseek-flash",
    }

Caveats

  • Kilo's page still says it supports deepseek-chat and deepseek-reasoner, and uses deepseek/deepseek-chat as the example model. DeepSeek's change log announced those names would be discontinued on 2026-07-24. Using deepseek/deepseek-flash or deepseek/deepseek-v4-pro is our substitution of DeepSeek's current ids into Kilo's documented provider/model format. If the id is not offered, pick a DeepSeek model from Kilo's model list.
  • Kilo's docs do not show the provider's base URL. The value listed here is DeepSeek's documented OpenAI-format base URL.
