Setup guide - From MiniMax and Kilo Code docs

Use MiniMax in Kilo Code

Kilo Code has a built-in MiniMax provider. Add MiniMax in Settings > Providers (VS Code) or set MINIMAX_API_KEY and a minimax/<model> default in kilo.json (CLI); MiniMax's own docs also give the provider fields.

Steps

  1. Step 1.

    MiniMax's guide: first clear the ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN and ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL env vars, otherwise they will override the configuration.

    Terminal
    unset ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN
    unset ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL
  2. Step 2.

    VS Code: open Settings (gear icon) and go to the Providers tab to add MiniMax and enter your API key. The extension stores this in your kilo.json config file. (MiniMax's guide lists the fields as API Provider = MiniMax, MiniMax Entrypoint = api.minimax.io, MiniMax API Key = your key, Model = MiniMax-M3.1-Flash-Preview, then Save and Done.)

  3. Step 3.

    CLI: set the API key as an environment variable.

    Terminal
    export MINIMAX_API_KEY="your-api-key"
  4. Step 4.

    CLI: or configure it in kilo.json (~/.config/kilo/kilo.json or ./kilo.json).

    JSON
    {
      "provider": {
        "minimax": {
          "env": ["MINIMAX_API_KEY"],
        },
      },
    }
  5. Step 5.

    Then set your default model using a current MiniMax model id (Kilo's docs example uses the format minimax/<model-id>).

    JSON
    {
      "model": "minimax/MiniMax-M2.7",
    }

Caveats

  • Kilo's docs example uses "model": "minimax/MiniMax-M1", which is not on MiniMax's current model list; the default-model snippet here combines Kilo's documented format with a current MiniMax model id.
  • MiniMax's Kilo steps use an M Plan Subscription Key with MiniMax-M3.1-Flash-Preview (M Plan only for now); a pay-as-you-go key from the MiniMax console (as Kilo's docs describe) should use a pay-as-you-go model such as MiniMax-M2.7 or MiniMax-M3.
  • The field labels in MiniMax's guide (MiniMax Entrypoint) may not match the current Kilo 'Providers' tab UI described in Kilo's docs.
  • Base URL is chosen by Kilo's built-in provider (entrypoint api.minimax.io), not entered manually.
