Steps
- Step 1.
Built-in models (VS Code): open Copilot Chat, then at the bottom of the chat view, select the CURRENT-MODEL dropdown menu, then click the AI model of your choice (for example Gemini 3.8 Flash or Gemini 4 Argon).
- Step 2.
Copilot Business/Enterprise: an enterprise or organization owner can enable or disable access to AI models for members. Individual plans can use models directly without configuring access or managing policies.
- Step 3.
Bring your own key (VS Code): in the Copilot chat view, click the CURRENT-MODEL dropdown menu, click Manage Models, click the provider whose model(s) you want to add (GitHub lists Gemini as an example provider), enter the API key or model ID when prompted and press Enter, then select the model(s) you want to add and click OK.
Caveats
- Model ids here are GitHub's display names from its model release status table, not raw Gemini API ids. Gemini 3.7 Flash appears in Copilot but not on Google's current models page.
- Per GitHub's supported-clients table, these three Gemini models are available in Copilot CLI, VS Code, Visual Studio, Eclipse, Xcode and JetBrains, but not on github.com (dotcom: false).
- "Copilot Free and Copilot Student only have access to auto model selection."
- For BYOK on Copilot Business or Enterprise, the "Bring Your Own Language Model Key in Select IDEs" policy must be enabled.
- Changing the chat model does not affect the model used for Copilot inline suggestions.
