Steps

  1. Step 1.

Get an API key from Google AI Studio (https://aistudio.google.com/app/apikey).

  2. Step 2.

goose Desktop: Open the sidebar, click Settings, click the Models tab, click Configure Providers, choose Google Gemini as provider from the list, click Configure, enter your API key, and click Submit.

  3. Step 3.

goose CLI: run goose configure, select Configure Providers, choose Google Gemini, enter your API key when prompted, then enter the Gemini model of your choice.

    Terminal
    goose configure
  4. Step 4.

Optional: for Gemini 3 models, set the thinking level. Precedence: request_params.thinking_level in model configuration, then the GEMINI3_THINKING_LEVEL environment variable, then the default value low.

Caveats

  • goose's sample CLI transcript enters model gemini-2.0-flash-exp, which is outdated (Google lists Gemini 2.0 Flash as Shut down). Enter a current id from Google's models page instead.
  • Gemini 3 thinking levels in goose are Low (default) and High.
