Free, open-source (Apache-2.0) AI agent built in Rust, governed by the Agentic AI Foundation. Desktop app, CLI, and API. Bring any of 15+ model providers or an existing subscription.
Goose is a general-purpose open-source AI agent that runs on your own machine as a native desktop app for macOS, Linux, and Windows, a full CLI, and an embeddable API. It started at Block and is now part of the Agentic AI Foundation at the Linux Foundation, which keeps it vendor-neutral. The agent itself is free under Apache-2.0: you pay only for the model you connect, whether that is an API key for Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Azure, Bedrock, or OpenRouter, a local model through Ollama, or an existing Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini subscription reused through the Agent Client Protocol (ACP). ACP works in the other direction too - Goose runs as an ACP server inside Zed, JetBrains, and VS Code, and can drive Claude Code or Codex as providers. Its differentiators are breadth and portability: 70+ documented MCP extensions for databases, APIs, GitHub, and Google Drive; MCP Apps that render interactive UIs inside the desktop app; recipes that capture a workflow as portable YAML you can share or run in CI; and subagents for parallel work. Security controls include prompt injection detection, per-tool permissions, a sandbox mode, and an adversary reviewer that watches for unsafe actions. Releases ship roughly weekly, so model support tracks new launches closely.

Open-source (MIT) terminal coding agent, renamed Codewhale, with Plan, Work, and Operate modes, approval postures, /undo and /restore, receipts, MCP servers, sub-agents, and a local runtime HTTP API. Provider-neutral: 40+ built-in provider routes plus local models, no longer DeepSeek by default.
OpenAI's open-source (Apache-2.0) terminal coding agent, built in Rust. Included with ChatGPT Plus from $20/mo or usable with an API key. Defaults to GPT-6.1 Sol.
Open-source terminal coding agent from Moonshot AI. Launched on Kimi K2.5 and now runs Kimi K3 with up to 1M tokens of context. Agent Swarm runs up to 100 parallel sub-agents.
Open-source AI coding agent for terminal, desktop, and IDE. Works with 75+ LLM providers including Claude, GPT, Gemini, and local models. Runs parallel sessions on one project.

Subscribe FreeAnthropic's agentic coding CLI. Runs in your terminal, edits files autonomously, spawns sub-agents, and maintains memory across sessions. Defaults to Claude Opus 5.5 on paid plans as of October 2026.
AI-native code editor forked from VS Code, now sold as part of The X Subscription. Agent edits multiple files at once and Tab autocomplete predicts your next edit. Plus is $8/mo (Cursor's own Grok and Composer models only); Premium at $30/mo adds third-party models at API list price.
OpenAI's coding agent for terminal, cloud, IDE, GitHub, Slack, and Linear workflows. Reads repos, edits files, runs commands, and returns reviewable diffs.
Configure Claude Code for maximum productivity -- CLAUDE.md, sub-agents, MCP servers, and autonomous workflows.
