DeepSeek-TUI is an open-source terminal UI for running a coding agent against a real local workspace. The important story is the runtime surface, not the model brand. It advertises a permission boundary (Plan, Agent, YOLO), rollback snapshots, sub-agents, MCP integration, LSP diagnostics, and background tasks with a headless HTTP and SSE interface. If you care about portability, this is a useful reference implementation for what developers now expect from a terminal agent harness: visible approvals, repeatable state, and receipts you can audit after the run.

Models: Over 40 built-in provider routes including Anthropic, DeepSeek, Google, Mistral, Moonshot, OpenAI, OpenRouter, and xAI, plus any OpenAI-compatible endpoint and local models through Ollama, vLLM, or SGLang. Add a key or local runtime with /provider (F3) and switch with /model (or /model auto to pick per turn); if no provider is configured and Ollama is already serving a chat model, Codewhale uses it automatically.
Recent changes: Oct 22v0.10.2 adds an animated pet view (/pet on), a live Terminal work dock and per-chat composer colors, keeps configured stdio MCP servers running across /resume, /load, and provider, profile, or plugin changes, and refuses shell commands containing invisible Unicode.
Oct 7v0.10.1 stops an expired Codewhale sign-in or unreachable account service from blocking turns on your own provider key, and archives superseded journal entries so long sessions use less memory.
Sep 22v0.10.0 brings a redesigned terminal workbench and clearer settings, and child agents no longer inherit desktop or computer-control tools.
