Steps
- Step 1.
CLI: run goose configure, select Configure Providers, choose OpenAI, enter your API key when prompted, then choose a model.
Terminalgoose configure - Step 2.
Desktop: open the sidebar, click Settings, open the Models tab, click Configure providers, click OpenAI, add your API key and click Submit. Or on first launch choose Quick Setup with API Key, or ChatGPT Subscription to sign in with ChatGPT Plus/Pro.
- Step 3.
Optional OpenAI provider variables: OPENAI_HOST (defaults to api.openai.com), OPENAI_BASE_PATH (defaults to v1/chat/completions), OPENAI_ORGANIZATION, OPENAI_PROJECT, OPENAI_CUSTOM_HEADERS.
- Step 4.
goose configure does not support custom model names; to use a model not in the provider's list, use goose Desktop (Use custom model) or set GOOSE_MODEL in config.yaml.
Caveats
- Goose's provider table describes OpenAI as providing gpt-4o, o1 and others; the GPT-6 ids come from OpenAI's model catalog.
- o1-mini and o1-preview are not supported because goose uses tool calling.
- Provider API keys placed in config.yaml are ignored.
- Goose docs now live at goose-docs.ai (block.github.io/goose redirects there).
