Setup guide - Documented by Roo Code

Use OpenAI in Roo Code

Roo Code connects directly to the official OpenAI API with an API key via the "OpenAI" provider, and supports all models available through OpenAI's API. A separate "OpenAI - ChatGPT Plus/Pro" provider signs in via OAuth instead of a key.

Steps

  1. Step 1.

Create a key on the OpenAI Platform API keys page (https://platform.openai.com/api-keys) and copy it immediately.

  2. Step 2.

Open Roo Code Settings (gear icon), choose "OpenAI" from the "API Provider" dropdown, paste your key into the "OpenAI API Key" field, and choose a model from the "Model" dropdown. Optionally set a custom Base URL.

  3. Step 3.

For reasoning models, set reasoning effort (low / medium / high, plus minimal on GPT-5 models) and verbosity in the provider settings.

Caveats

  • Roo Code's page points to OpenAI's models documentation for the up-to-date list and describes GPT-5-era reasoning controls; it does not name GPT-6 models. The ids shown come from OpenAI's model catalog.
  • Roo Code docs now live at roocodeinc.github.io/Roo-Code (docs.roocode.com redirects there).
  • Azure OpenAI should be configured through Roo Code's OpenAI-compatible provider.
