Steps
- Step 1.
Get an API key from the OpenAI Console (https://platform.openai.com/account/api-keys).
- Step 2.
Add a model block to your Continue YAML config using provider: openai.
YAMLname: My Config version: 0.0.1 schema: v1 models: - name: <MODEL_NAME> provider: openai model: <MODEL_ID> apiKey: <YOUR_OPENAI_API_KEY> - Step 3.
Continue uses OpenAI's /responses endpoint by default for o-series and gpt-5 models. If you hit "organization must be verified" errors, force /chat/completions with useResponsesApi: false.
YAMLname: My Config version: 0.0.1 schema: v1 models: - name: gpt-5 provider: openai model: gpt-5 useResponsesApi: false
Caveats
- Continue's page uses a <MODEL_ID> placeholder; the ids shown are from OpenAI's model catalog and are substituted into Continue's documented config.
- Continue's docs state the Responses API default for o-series and gpt-5 models; behaviour for GPT-6 ids is not stated.
- The JSON config format is marked deprecated; use YAML.
