Last verified 2 steps3 official sources

Steps

  1. Step 1.

Get an API key from the xAI Console (https://console.x.ai/).

  2. Step 2.

Add an xai model to your Continue config (YAML). Replace <MODEL_ID> with a current xAI id such as grok-4.7.

    YAML
    name: My Config
    version: 0.0.1
    schema: v1

    models:
      - name: <MODEL_NAME>
        provider: xai
        model: <MODEL_ID>
        apiKey: <YOUR_XAI_API_KEY>

Caveats

  • Continue's page uses a <MODEL_ID> placeholder and links an advanced example for grok-code-fast-1, which xAI retired on May 15, 2026 (it now redirects to grok-build-0.1). The model ids here come from docs.x.ai/developers/models.
  • The JSON config format is marked deprecated in Continue's docs; use YAML.
