Cline: Error writing file: Failed to open diff editor
Error writing file: Failed to open diff editorStatus: WorkaroundLast verified 2 documented fixes4 sources
What it means
Cline's file-writing tool could not open the VS Code diff view in time, so the edit failed. A maintainer identified it as triggering when the diff editor fails to open within 10 seconds.
Causes
- The VS Code diff editor not opening within the 10-second window (maintainer arafatkatze in #4384), more likely on slow machines or environments.
How to fix it
- Fix 1.
Maintainer kevinneung: uninstall and reinstall Cline, then reclone your repo after the reinstallation (steps from #821). He also noted you are not charged for the request that surfaces the tool-call error.
- Fix 2.
Update Cline: maintainers closed #4970 stating the DiffViewProvider was completely rewritten. 3.47.0 added experimental Background Edits, which edit files without opening the diff view.
