How to raise your limits
Copilot Free plan (Auto model selection only)
Upgrade to a paid plan (Copilot Pro, Pro+, or Max). Docs: "Copilot Free plans are only available to individual developers who don't have access to Copilot through an organization or enterprise."
Copilot Student plan (Auto model selection only)
Upgrade to a paid plan. No published way to raise the Student allowance.
Copilot Pro plan (Chat, CLI, cloud agent, Spaces, Spark, third-party coding agents billed in AI credits)
Upgrade the plan ("The upgrade cost is only the price difference between your current plan and the new plan"; earlier usage counts within the new plan's larger allowance), or stay on the plan and set a budget for additional usage in US dollars ("a $10 budget covers 1,000 AI credits"; additional usage "may be capped" and must be paid off to continue), or wait for the monthly reset.
Copilot Pro+ plan
Upgrade to Copilot Max (you pay only the price difference), set a USD budget for additional usage at 1 AI credit = $0.01 USD, or wait for the monthly reset.
Copilot Max plan
Max is the top individual plan. To keep working after credits run out, set a USD budget for additional usage (it may be capped; pay off what you have used to continue), or wait for the monthly reset.
Copilot Business plan (per granted seat, pooled at billing entity)
Add licenses: this grows the pool right away (removing licenses mid-cycle only shrinks it from the next cycle). Additional usage is enabled by default and billed at per-credit rates; admins can turn it off by disabling the "AI credits paid usage" policy in AI Controls. Caps come from user-level budgets (always a hard stop; a $0 USD budget blocks the user immediately), cost-center, organization, and enterprise budgets. Users who run out see a banner on GitHub.com offering to request more budget from their administrator.
Copilot Enterprise plan (GitHub Enterprise Cloud only; per granted seat, pooled)
Same as Business: add licenses, keep additional usage on (the default), and set budgets. Docs example: "a cost center with 10 Copilot Business licenses and 5 Copilot Enterprise licenses has a cap of 38,500 AI credits" (included usage cap).
Legacy premium request-based billing (Copilot Pro annual-plan subscribers who stayed on request-based billing after June 1, 2026)
Set a budget for additional premium requests ($0.04/request) or upgrade to a higher plan. Additional premium requests are not available to anyone who subscribes, or has subscribed, through GitHub Mobile on iOS or Android. When the allowance runs out you can keep using an included model for the rest of the month ("This is subject to change"; requests may be rate limited). When the annual plan ends, the account is downgraded to Copilot Free automatically.
Service rate limits (all plans and models)
Docs: "Wait and try again. Rate limits are temporary." Check your usage pattern, or "If you are on an individual Copilot plan, upgrading your plan will allow for additional usage."
What the docs leave out
- Since June 1, 2026, premium requests no longer apply to current plans. They now apply only to Copilot Pro and Pro+ annual-plan subscribers who stayed on legacy request-based billing. No current premium request allowances exist for Business, Enterprise, Max, Free, or Student.
- Copilot Free and Copilot Student AI credit allowances: the docs say only 'An allowance of GitHub AI Credits' and give no number.
- Numeric rate limits (RPM, TPM, concurrency, per model): not published anywhere in the Copilot docs.
- The cap on additional usage for individuals ('additional usage may be capped') has no published number.
- Live per-account usage and remaining allowance appear only in the logged-in usage dashboard and billing settings.
