Content and CMS - official Contentful server

Contentful MCP server

Contentful offers a hosted remote MCP server and an open-source local server that let agents manage entries, content types, assets, releases, locales, taxonomy, environments and AI Actions in Contentful spaces. Both expose the same core toolset and differ in authentication and access gating. Contentful hosts it at https://mcp.contentful.com/mcp, or you can run @contentful/mcp-server (npm) locally with OAuth or API key auth.

Notes and caveats

  • Remote server uses OAuth 2.1 and requires the Contentful MCP app (Marketplace) installed and configured in each space/environment; the app sets a per-environment allow-list of tool categories (read-only or read/write) on top of user permissions.
  • EU organizations must use https://mcp.eu.contentful.com/mcp instead of the global endpoint.
  • Environment aliases are not supported (use the underlying environment ID).
  • Install snippets above are for the remote server.
  • The local server runs via npx -y @contentful/mcp-server with a Content Management API personal access token in CONTENTFUL_MANAGEMENT_ACCESS_TOKEN (plus optional SPACE_ID, ENVIRONMENT_ID, CONTENTFUL_HOST) and has no per-tool gating beyond the token.
  • Tool descriptions are condensed from the documented category descriptions; the full list covers entries, content types, assets, releases, spaces and environments, organizations, locales, tags, AI Actions, taxonomy and editor interfaces.
  • Latest release mcp-server@1.23.20 (2026-10-17).
  • Codex is not documented.
