Notes and caveats

  • Figma strongly recommends the remote server instead; the desktop server is intended for specific organization and enterprise needs.
  • Enabled from Dev Mode in the Figma desktop app (no separate auth step; it uses the signed-in desktop app).
  • Requires the Figma desktop app and a Dev or Full seat on a Professional, Education, Organization, Government, or Enterprise plan.
  • It does not support writing to the canvas or sending UI to Figma; remote-only tools (use_figma, generate_figma_design, download_assets, create_new_file, upload_assets, generate_diagram, search_design_system, whoami and others) are not available.
  • It is the only option on Figma for Government, where MCP services are not yet included in Figma's FedRAMP audit.
  • Codex setup is documented only through the Codex app settings UI (MCP servers > Add server > Streamable HTTP, name figma-desktop, URL http://127.0.0.1:3845/mcp), so no CLI snippet is given.
  • VS Code setup is documented only through MCP: Add Server > HTTP with the same URL and server ID figma-desktop; no JSON snippet is given.
