Notes and caveats

  • In preview for Looker-hosted Looker (Google Cloud core) and Looker (original) instances; customer-hosted instances are not supported.
  • All tools are off by default and a Looker admin must enable them under Admin > Platform > MCP.
  • During preview an admin must register each AI client as an OAuth app (CLIENT_GUID and redirect URI) through the API Explorer or the oauth_client_apps endpoint; Dynamic Client Registration and fine-grained OAuth scopes are not supported.
  • Claude Code needs a fixed callback port (8080) matching the registered redirect URI.
  • Tool allowlist changes need a client reconnect.
  • Fixed preview capacity may cause timeouts.
  • No extra cost, but tool calls use the instance's API quotas.
  • Respects VPC Service Controls, CMEK and IP allowlists.
  • Docs also give snippets for Gemini CLI, Gemini Enterprise, Claude Desktop, Cline and Windsurf.
  • Tool names in the docs are listed without a prefix, while the admin page shows prefixed names such as looker_query.
  • For customer-hosted instances Google points to the open-source MCP Toolbox for Databases (github.com/googleapis/mcp-toolbox), which Google first announced as the Looker MCP Server integration; it is a general-purpose server and not listed here as a separate entry.
