Notes and caveats

  • Introduced as the official Metabase MCP server in Metabase 60 (2026-04-16); Metabase 64 (2026-10-15) shipped a major MCP upgrade.
  • An admin must turn it on under Admin > AI > MCP, and it stays off if all AI features are disabled; no AI provider is needed in Metabase.
  • Auth is OAuth 2.0 via Metabase's embedded OAuth server with dynamic client registration and scopes (agent:content:read, agent:content:write, agent:query:run, agent:sql:run, agent:delivery:write).
  • Plan availability changed: the Metabase 60 release notes said Pro and Enterprise, while the current AI overview docs say the MCP server is available on all plans.
  • Clients connected before 0.64 must sign in again after upgrading. visualize_query is not listed by clients that cannot render inline charts, such as Claude Code.
  • The server ships inside the metabase/metabase codebase; license left null because the docs do not say whether it lives in the AGPL core or the commercially licensed enterprise code.
  • MCP analytics are a Pro and Enterprise feature.
