Notes and caveats

  • Hosted service at https://mcp.tableau.com uses OAuth 2.1 and is available to Tableau Cloud customers on any SKU; it is not available for Tableau Server, whose customers self-host (npx @tableau/mcp-server, Docker, Heroku) using a Personal Access Token (SERVER, SITE_NAME, PAT_NAME, PAT_VALUE).
  • Local install needs Node.js 22.7.5 or later.
  • Some tools need extra entitlements (Pulse Insight Briefs and Tableau Knowledge need Tableau+; full Metadata API needs Data Management).
  • Site admins cannot turn off the hosted service but can block tool groups through the EXCLUDE_TOOLS site setting in the REST API.
  • Also offered as a Claude connector, a ChatGPT plugin, a Claude Desktop .mcpb extension (runs locally) and through the Tableau Slack app.
  • Latest release v4.27.2 on 2026-10-16.
