Claude Ultra Plan: Max 20x Renamed, 5-Hour Limit Gone

TL;DR
Anthropic renamed Max 20x to Ultra and dropped the five-hour limit for verified accounts. What the 10x weekly label means, how to check yours, and Max vs Ultra.
Anthropic renamed its two Claude Max plans on Friday, October 30: the $100 Max 5x plan is now just "Max," and the $200 Max 20x plan is now "Ultra." The headline change is that verified Ultra accounts no longer have a five-hour usage limit. Search interest followed immediately: "claude ultra" jumped from a baseline near 12 to a peak of 53 in Google Trends interest-over-time data checked on November 3, on the same scale where "claude code skills" sits in the mid-20s. Treat those as relative index values, not search counts.
If you came here for the short version: prices did not change, the weekly limit still applies, and the label on the weekly multiplier changed in a way Anthropic has not explained. Here is what the primary sources say, how to check which side of the change you are on, and how to choose between Max and Ultra.
What Anthropic's pages say#
The Ultra plan help article is the clearest statement. It says "The Max 20x plan is now called the Ultra plan. Existing Max 20x subscribers move to Ultra automatically, with no price change," and that Ultra "includes 10 times the Pro plan's usage every week and has no five-hour limit, for verified accounts."
The pricing page lays out the ladder:
| Plan | Price | Five-hour limit | Weekly usage | Monthly API credits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pro | $20 monthly ($17 annual rate) | 1x | 1x | none |
| Max | $100 | 5x Pro | 5x Pro | $100 |
| Ultra | $200 | none for verified accounts | 10x Pro | $200 |
Both Max and Ultra include Fable for up to half of the weekly limit, per the same page. The usage limits help article adds the part that matters for developers: usage across claude.ai, Claude Desktop and Claude Code all draws from the same pool, so a long terminal session and a chat tab are spending the same weekly budget.
Verification is automatic. Per the help article, Anthropic verifies Ultra accounts "using factors like your account and payment history," and unverified accounts get "a temporary limit" that is removed automatically. Adding a phone number at checkout is a separate step and does not lift it. The Next Web reports that most existing subscribers got the change on Friday and newer accounts wait for an email.
The 20x to 10x question#
Here is the part worth slowing down on. The old name said 20x. The new pricing page says Ultra is "10x Pro usage every week." The Next Web notes that "Anthropic's post did not mention the change," and its headline-level reading is that weekly limits stay the same.
Those two statements cannot both be a plain description of capacity unless the old "20x" was measured against something other than weekly Pro usage, for example the five-hour window. Anthropic has not said which. What we can say from the published numbers:
- Max is 5x Pro weekly for $100. Ultra is 10x Pro weekly for $200. Per dollar, the two plans are now identical on weekly usage.
- Before the rename, the 20x plan implied it was four times Max 5x for twice the price. Whether the real weekly capacity changed or only the label did is not established by anything Anthropic has published.
Do not lean on either reading. Your account's own numbers in Settings > Usage are the only ground truth you have, and the existing explainer on Fable burn rates still applies: heavier models and higher effort drain whichever budget you have faster.
Who wins, who loses#
The five-hour limit was a rate limiter. Removing it for verified accounts moves the constraint from "how much per burst" to "how much per week." The New Stack's coverage makes the consequence explicit: Ultra users keep the same weekly allowance and "could use it up sooner" without the five-hour wall forcing a pause.
That sorts users cleanly:
- Wins: people running one or two long autonomous Claude Code sessions, big refactors, or overnight agent runs that used to stall at a five-hour boundary. The interruption cost, not the token cost, was the problem.
- Neutral: anyone who never exhausted a weekly limit. A flat label change costs them nothing.
- Loses: anyone who used the five-hour reset as an accidental budget governor. Without it, a runaway loop can burn a week of capacity in one sitting. If you run parallel agents, read what parallel Claude agents actually cost before removing your own guardrails.
The second-order effect is competitive, and it is my read rather than something Anthropic stated: selling uninterrupted sessions as the premium feature, instead of a bigger raw multiplier, shifts the comparison with other coding agents to weekly pools and priority access. For how the other tools price this, see the AI coding tools pricing comparison.
What to do Monday#
- Check whether you are verified. Open Settings > Usage. Per Anthropic, "If you don't see a Current session bar, your account is verified."
- Note your weekly numbers before and after. Screenshot the weekly bar now. If you were on Max 20x, compare how fast it moves on a task you know the cost of. That is the only way to tell label from capacity.
- Add your own cap if the five-hour limit was your brake. Set a task budget or stop condition in whatever launches your agents; the plan will no longer stop a loop for you.
- Decide Max vs Ultra on one question: do you hit the five-hour wall, or the weekly wall? If the five-hour wall, Ultra is a real upgrade. If the weekly wall, Ultra is simply two Max plans in one at the same price per unit, and the $200 API credit is proportional too (how the monthly credits work).
- Teams: the rename covers individual plans only. The help article points organizations to the Team and Enterprise articles, and the Team plan vs API comparison is the better starting point.
What people are actually saying#
The reaction on r/ClaudeAI splits along the 20x to 10x line.
- One highly visible thread is titled "New Ultra plan has half the usage of the previous 20x plan". Its own commenters are not unanimous: one asks whether anyone has actually seen the five-hour limit removed, saying they have been on Max 20 since January and theirs has not changed. That fits Anthropic's note that verification rolls out per account.
- A separate thread, "Solo founder hitting Ultra weekly limits early in the week", carries the reading that Ultra is "officially confirmed as 2x the weekly limit of Max." That is consistent with the pricing page's 5x vs 10x, but it is a user restating the page, not new information.
- The counter-case: the pricing table really does give Ultra twice Max's weekly usage for twice the price, and Anthropic's help article frames the rename as no price change. Nobody in these threads has published a before-and-after measurement of weekly capacity, so the "it was halved" claim is a reasonable suspicion rather than a measured result.
Treat the Reddit threads as signal about user sentiment only. They are not evidence about what Anthropic changed.
Bottom line#
The verified facts: Max 20x is now Ultra at the same $200, verified accounts lose the five-hour limit, the weekly limit remains, and the published weekly multiplier is 10x Pro. The unverified fact, until someone measures it: whether weekly capacity changed. Check your own usage bars, and pick Ultra only if the five-hour wall is what actually slows you down.
