Claude Max API Credits: $100 a Month, What They Cover

TL;DR
Anthropic now gives Max and Team plans a monthly Claude API credit: $100 on Max 5x, $200 on Max 20x, up to $500 pooled on Team. What it covers, what it does not, and how to claim it.
Last updated: October 8, 2026 - checked against Anthropic's Help Center article and Claude Platform docs the day after launch. Rollout is staged over several days, so your account may not show the offer yet.
Claude Max and Team plans now include a monthly Claude API credit: $100 on Max 5x, $200 on Max 20x, and up to $500 pooled on Team. The credit is for building your own apps and agents on the Claude Platform. It does not pay for interactive Claude Code, and it does not raise your plan limits. Anthropic announced it on October 7 alongside Claude Haiku 5.5, and the first wave of headlines got one important detail wrong.
What Anthropic actually announced#
The primary documents are Anthropic's Haiku 5.5 launch post, the Help Center article and the Claude Platform docs page. Together they say:
| Plan | Monthly credit |
|---|---|
| Max 5x | $100 |
| Max 20x | $200 |
| Team, Standard seat | $20 per seat |
| Team, Premium seat | $100 per seat |
Team credits are pooled into one balance and capped at $500 a month. Anthropic's own example: three Standard seats and two Premium seats gets $260 a month. Free, Pro and Enterprise plans are not eligible, and new subscribers can claim after seven days on an eligible plan.
What the credit covers: the Claude API (Messages and Message Batches), the Playground, Claude Managed Agents and the Claude Agent SDK. What it does not cover: interactive Claude Code in the terminal, IDE, desktop or web, extra usage in Claude apps, and Claude on Bedrock, Vertex AI or Foundry.
Mechanics that matter before you plan around it:
- You claim it by linking one Console organization to your plan. You cannot change the link yourself afterwards, and each Console org can take credits from only one plan.
- Credits expire at the end of each billing cycle with no rollover, and they are spent before any credits you bought.
- Every API key in the linked org draws from the same balance. Anthropic points to workspace spend limits as the way to cap a project or teammate.
- Spend still counts toward the org's monthly spend cap, and linking moves the org to at least the Start tier (at least Build if the credits exceed $200 a month), per the docs.
- When the balance hits zero with nothing purchased behind it, API requests stop until the next grant. Usage is never billed to your plan.
The part the headlines got wrong#
The same day, a r/ClaudeAI thread was titled "Claude Agent SDK no longer usable with subscription limits; now API-only", and a r/ClaudeCode thread carried a similar framing. The Help Center's Agent SDK article says the opposite: "You can still use the Claude Agent SDK, claude -p, and third-party apps with your subscription limits." What changed is that there is now a second, separate pot you can use instead.
The credits FAQ draws the line precisely for claude -p:
- Run
claude -por the Agent SDK yourself with an API key from your linked Console org, and the usage is billed as Agent SDK usage, so the credits cover it. - Run them signed in with your Claude plan, and they still draw from your plan limits, not the credits.
- Runs started by the Claude Code GitHub Action, an IDE extension or the desktop app count as Claude Code usage, so the credits do not cover them, even with
-p.
Anthropic also says this is not the Agent SDK credit announced in June: "That credit isn't available." If you read our earlier take on that plan in Claude Agent SDK Credits End the Subscription Arbitrage, treat the June split as superseded by this structure.
The angle: two buckets, on purpose#
My read, and it is analysis rather than something Anthropic states: the plan is now two meters. The flat subscription pays for a human in an interactive session. The API credit pays for software you write that calls the model. Keeping those apart protects the flat-rate economics from always-on automation while giving every Max and Team account a free reason to build something on the Platform.
The second-order effect is on who finds the Platform. A Max subscriber who previously had no API org now gets one, with no card required. That is a funnel from the consumer-ish plan into the developer product, and the "first $100 is free" framing is a stronger hook than another price cut. Anthropic's own stated purpose is to let subscribers "experiment with building tools, apps, and agents that call our API".
What it is not: more Claude Code. A Max user who keeps hitting Claude Code limits gets nothing from this, and the docs say the credits "don't change your usage limits in Claude or Claude Code". For that problem, start with routing and workload hygiene in the Claude Code usage limits playbook.
What $100 buys (vendor list prices)#
Using Anthropic's launch-day list prices, which are vendor-reported and subject to the 100K-token pricing tier:
| Model | Input / output per 1M tokens | $100 of input | $100 of output |
|---|---|---|---|
| Haiku 5.5 (prompts up to 100K) | $0.10 / $0.50 | 1,000M tokens | 200M tokens |
| Sonnet 5.5 | $2.00 / $10.00 | 50M tokens | 10M tokens |
Sonnet 5.5 cache reads also dropped to $0.10 per million tokens on the same day, which Anthropic says cuts its cost on most agentic work by around 20%. The arithmetic is mine. Real bills depend on cache hit rate and output share, so read Prompt Caching for the Claude API before you size anything. Offline work on the Message Batches API costs 50% less, per the credits docs.
What to do Monday#
- Check eligibility: Max 5x, Max 20x or Team, at least seven days in. You need to be the Max subscriber, or a Team Owner or Primary Owner, plus Owner, Admin or Billing in the Console org.
- On claude.ai go to Settings > Billing (Organization settings > Billing on Team), find API credits, and choose Link organization. Pick the org you will actually build in, because you cannot swap it later without support.
- In the Console, create a workspace per project and set a spend limit on each, so one runaway loop cannot eat the whole pool.
- Put the cheap, repetitive work on the cheap model. A headless call using a key from the linked org looks like this (assembled from the credits FAQ and Anthropic's published model id, not run by me, since the credit had not reached my account):
export ANTHROPIC_API_KEY="<key from the linked Console org>"
claude -p "Summarize the open TODOs in this repo as five bullets" --model claude-haiku-5-5
Where it breaks: if that org holds only these credits and the request is something they do not cover, such as an interactive Claude Code session, Anthropic's docs say Claude Code shows Credit balance too low · Add funds. Budget for the zero-balance case, because requests simply stop until the next grant.
What people are actually saying#
I could read Reddit only through search excerpts, so treat this as the shape of the reaction, not a census.
- Several r/ClaudeAI posts frame it as straight value. One is titled "New perk free $100 Monthly API Credit a month!!" and another "This is incredible value for Max plans".
- The sharpest misreading is the "now API-only" thread, echoed in r/ClaudeCode. Anthropic's Help Center says subscription-limit usage of the SDK and
claude -pcontinues. - The counter-case is the exclusion list. MIXED headlined that the credits cannot be spent on Claude Code, which is the product most Max subscribers bought the plan for. If Claude Code is your whole workload, the credit is a bonus for a different job.
