Notes and caveats

  • V2 uses OAuth with a pre-registered client: create an MCP app in the Asana developer console to get a client ID and secret, and register the exact redirect URL your client uses (Claude Code http://localhost:8080/callback; Cursor cursor://anysphere.cursor-mcp/oauth/callback; VS Code needs http://127.0.0.1:33418/ and https://vscode.dev/redirect).
  • VS Code setup is a UI flow (MCP: Add Server) with no config snippet.
  • The Codex, Windsurf and Kiro setups use the community mcp-remote bridge, which Asana does not support.
  • The tools reference links a changelog post titled 'New V2 MCP server now generally available'.
  • The beta V1 server at https://mcp.asana.com/sse was deprecated with a shutdown date of 05/11/2026.
  • MCP tokens do not work with the REST API.
  • Enterprise+ admins can allow or block MCP clients through app management.
  • Interactive preview tools (create_task_preview, create_project_preview, search_tasks_preview) render only in Claude and ChatGPT.
