Notes and caveats

  • Available on Box Business plans and above; AI tools are limited to those in your plan.
  • A Box admin must enable the MCP server (or a specific client integration such as Claude or ChatGPT - MCP) in the Admin Console; custom clients such as Cursor and VS Code need admin-created Integration Credentials (client ID, secret, redirect URI, scopes).
  • Scopes root_readwrite, ai.readwrite and docgen.readwrite (Doc Gen requires Enterprise Advanced).
  • Several write tools (move, metadata updates, shared links, collaborations, upload/download URLs) are off by default until an admin enables them.
  • Codex setup is via the Codex plugins marketplace and VS Code setup via the GitHub MCP Registry install button, so no copyable snippet is documented for those.
  • The GitHub repo is a pointer README with no releases.
  • The older self-hosted Python server (box-community/mcp-server-box) is deprecated per Box docs and not listed separately.
