RedisVL MCP server

MCP server included in the RedisVL Python library that exposes one existing Redis Search index as a governed retrieval tool, running vector, full-text or hybrid search as set in config, with optional server-side embedding on upsert. The index schema is read from Redis at startup. It runs locally from redisvl[mcp] (pypi); the notes below cover how it authenticates.

Tools

search-records
Search the index by text query, with filters, pagination and return fields; the search mode is set in config.
upsert-records
Validate records against the index schema, embed text server-side if needed, and write them to Redis. Disabled in read-only mode.

As documented on October 17, 2026. A running server reports its current list through tools/list.

Notes and caveats

  • Run with rvl mcp --config mcp.yaml.
  • The YAML config sets the Redis URL, the index, the search type and the vectorizer; the vectorizer reads its API keys from environment variables.
  • SSE and streamable-http endpoints are unauthenticated by default and should sit behind an authenticating proxy or on a trusted network.
  • A --read-only flag removes upsert-records.
  • Each server binds to one index; multi-index support is planned.
  • Redis positions it alongside the main Redis MCP Server, not as a replacement.
  • The fuller config reference is at docs.redisvl.com.

How do I add the RedisVL MCP server to Cursor?

Redis documents a Cursor config; copy it from the Cursor section of this page.

Does the RedisVL MCP server need authentication?

It uses a scheme other than OAuth or an API key, such as the session of the app or instance it runs in; the notes on this page describe it. Transport: stdio, SSE, Streamable HTTP. Status: Unlabelled, last checked October 17, 2026.
