Databases - official Weaviate server

Weaviate MCP server

MCP server built into the Weaviate database binary, served over Streamable HTTP at /v1/mcp on the REST API port. Agents can inspect collection schemas, list tenants, run hybrid searches and, when write access is on, upsert objects, all under Weaviate auth and RBAC. It is served from your own instance at https://<your-cluster-host>/v1/mcp with API key auth.

Notes and caveats

  • Preview in v1.37, general availability in v1.38 (per the 1.38 release post).
  • Self-hosted: off by default, turn it on with MCP_SERVER_ENABLED=true and write tools with MCP_SERVER_WRITE_ACCESS_ENABLED=true.
  • Weaviate Cloud: always on, upsert available unless the cluster-wide 'Enable MCP Read-Only' switch is set.
  • Clusters using Weaviate Embeddings also need the X-Weaviate-Cluster-Url header.
  • RBAC needs the read_mcp/create_mcp/update_mcp permissions.
  • Claude Desktop needs the third-party mcp-proxy bridge.
  • The older standalone Go repo weaviate/mcp-server-weaviate is deprecated and unmaintained.
