Open-source local MCP server from Xero that bridges MCP clients to the Xero API for contacts, chart of accounts, invoices, quotes, credit notes, payments, bank transactions, reports and NZ/UK payroll timesheets and leave. It runs locally from @xeroapi/xero-mcp-server (npm) with OAuth auth.

Notes and caveats

  • Generic snippet is the Claude Desktop config from the README.
  • Auth uses either a Xero Custom Connection (client ID and secret, OAuth2) or a bearer token via XERO_CLIENT_BEARER_TOKEN for multi-account flows such as PKCE.
  • Custom connections created from Apr 29, 2026 need the granular V2 scopes.
  • Payroll tools need an NZ or UK region.
  • Requires Node.js 18+.
  • Xero now also runs a hosted Remote MCP server (see xero-remote).
