Setup guide - Documented by Zed

Use Mistral in Zed

Zed has a native Mistral provider for the Zed Agent: an API key in Agent Settings or MISTRAL_API_KEY, plus optional custom models under language_models.mistral with api_url https://api.mistral.ai/v1. Codestral can separately serve as Zed's Edit Prediction provider.

Steps

  1. Step 1.

    Visit the Mistral platform and create an API key (console.mistral.ai/api-keys).

  2. Step 2.

    Open Agent Settings with agent::OpenSettings, go to the Mistral section, and enter your Mistral API key. Zed also reads MISTRAL_API_KEY from the local Zed process environment.

    Terminal
    export MISTRAL_API_KEY="your_mistral_api_key"
  3. Step 3.

    Optionally add custom Mistral models (alternate model ids, limits, tool or image support, custom endpoint). Docs example:

    JSON
    {
      "language_models": {
        "mistral": {
          "api_url": "https://api.mistral.ai/v1",
          "available_models": [
            {
              "name": "mistral-tiny-latest",
              "display_name": "Mistral Tiny",
              "max_tokens": 32000,
              "max_output_tokens": 4096,
              "max_completion_tokens": 1024,
              "supports_tools": true,
              "supports_images": false
            }
          ]
        }
      }
    }
  4. Step 4.

    For Codestral edit predictions: open the Settings Editor, search for "Edit Predictions", click Configure Providers, and enter your key in the Codestral section. Or set it in settings:

    JSON
    {
      "edit_predictions": {
        "provider": "codestral"
      }
    }

Caveats

  • The custom-model snippet is Zed's verbatim example. mistral-tiny-latest is not a current Mistral model in Mistral's Models Overview, so replace name with a current id such as mistral-medium-latest and set the limits from Mistral's docs (256k context for Medium 3.5).
  • Zed's Codestral edit-prediction section links to the Codestral dashboard (console.mistral.ai/codestral) for the key.
  • Mistral separately documents running its Vibe agent in ACP-compatible clients. Zed's Agent Client Protocol (ACP) External Agents feature is a different path from the Zed Agent provider set up here.
  • Devstral 2 (devstral-2512) was retired 2026-07-31 and replaced by mistral-medium-3-5.
