Convex MCP server

Local MCP server built into the Convex CLI that lets agents inspect and act on a Convex deployment: list tables and schemas, page through data, run read-only one-off queries, call deployed functions, read logs and health insights, and manage environment variables. It runs locally from convex (npm); the notes below cover how it authenticates.

As documented on October 17, 2026. A running server reports its current list through tools/list.

Notes and caveats

  • Uses the credentials from npx convex login (access to all projects on the account) unless CONVEX_DEPLOY_KEY is set to restrict it to one deployment; the insights tool is unavailable with a deploy key.
  • Production access is limited to non-PII read-only tools by default; --cautiously-allow-production-pii and --dangerously-enable-production-deployments widen it, and --disable-tools removes tools.
  • The Claude Code snippet installs the official Convex plugin, which starts the MCP server automatically (Convex recommends the plugin for Claude Code and Cursor).
  • The docs page carries no beta/GA label.

FAQ

What does the Convex MCP server do?

The vendor documents 12 tools, including status, tables, data and runOneoffQuery.

How do I add the Convex MCP server to Claude Code?

Run /plugin install convex@claude-plugins-official, copied from Convex's docs. This page also has snippets for Codex, Cursor, VS Code and Generic.

Does the Convex MCP server need authentication?

It uses a scheme other than OAuth or an API key, such as the session of the app or instance it runs in; the notes on this page describe it. Transport: stdio. Status: Unlabelled, last checked October 17, 2026.
